Huawei to launch new operating system next month
The use of its own operating system will mean it will no longer be reliant on Android

The Chinese tech giant will launch its new Harmony operating system (OS) for smartphones next week. HarmonyOS had already been launched for other types of devices including tablets and wearables in 2019. The use of its own operating system will mean it will no longer be reliant on Android. As a reminder, in 2019, US sanctions have banned Google from providing technical support for the new Huawei phone model, so the HarmonyOS provides some way to mitigate the effects of the sanctions. Last year, the U.S. moved to cut Huawei off from key chip supplies it needs for its smartphones. Last month, the company said that its revenues dropped sharply in the first quarter as U.S. sanctions took a toll on its business. Its revenues fell 16.5% year-on-year to $23.5 billion in the three months ending March 31.
