Deploying a back-up plan in key markets as U.S. sanctions threaten its business, China’s Huawei has applied to trademark its “Hongmeng” operating system in at least nine countries and Europe. The Trump administration put Huawei on a blacklist last month that barred it from doing business with U.S. tech companies. Last month, Google locked Huawei out of its Android updates, though the US Commerce Department granted it a three-month general license to update existing devices. The world’s second-largest maker of smartphones has not yet revealed details about its OS. Huawei wants to use “Hongmeng” for gadgets ranging from smartphones, portable computers to robots and car televisions. The company’s shares closed nearly 3% higher in Asia.
